Mark Weiser

On April 27, 1999 Dr. Mark Weiser, Chief Technologist at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, passed away.

The scope1 organization was honored and excited that Mark accepted our invitation to present his thoughts online the future at our first annual conference; he long ago charted many key aspects of the future of our relationship with information, which are only now beginning to come into existence. We deeply regret the loss to his family and many friends, as well as to human culture.

Mark was world-renowned as an innovative computer scientist with a unique vision of the future. He has often been described as the father of "ubiquitous computing," a term he coined in 1988 to describe a time when invisible computers will be embedded in every day objects. Ubiquitous computing's inspirations have influenced everything from cutting-edge research on wearable computing to arguments advocating "information appliances," to the development of hand-held PDAs. He was also an avid drummer, and a member of Severe Tire Damage, the first band to ever perform on the Internet.

Mark is survived by his wife and two children.
