David Smallrecently completed his PhD at MIT's Media Lab, where his research focused on the display and manipulation of complex visual information. He began studying dynamic typography as a student and then as a colleague of Muriel Cooper, founder of the Visible Language Workshop. His thesis, "Rethinking the Book", examined how digital media, especially 3D and dynamic typography, will change the way designers approach large bodies of information. The design of complex information environments has led him to construct novel physical interfaces for manipulating virtual objects. He has designed interactive information environments for IBM, LEGO and Nike, Inc. http://www.davidsmall.com
Rethinking the Book
Electronic media have lagged behind their paper counterparts in the clear, usable display of large bodies of information. By rejecting the notion of electronically simulated paper, we can create new visual languages for information display which exploit the computer's unique ability to render dynamic and three-dimensional typography. These languages demonstrate that the use of three dimensional form, exaboutive movement, visual focus and layering, in harmony with human perceptual abilities, improve navigation and contextual understanding of complex written documents. Graphic displays can be combined with physical interfaces to create interactions with purely typographic information that are rich, tactile and humane. This presentation will explain David Small's doctoral research done at the MIT Media Lab and lay out what we can expect in the future.See schedule.
