Bill Schilit
is a computer science researcher at Fuji Xerox Palo Alto Laboratory, where his work focuses on information appliances. Most recently, he has been pondering how computers can help us read and is developing next generation e-books. Mr. Schilit has been a research scientist at AT&T Bell Labs and a visiting scientist at Xerox PARC, where he worked on the Ubiquitous Computing Initiative and developed the first context-aware mobile computer. Mr. Schilit has published numerous research papers and holds 10 patents. He serves on the editorial board of IEEE Computer and IEEE Personal Communications.

Why e-Read?
It is likely that most of you have heard of "e-books," those reading appliances that, we are told, will change the world. In this talk, I'd like to consider the question "Why e-read?" For sure I'll e-mail my family, e-ticket my vacations, e-trade stocks, and perhaps e-file my next tax return, but why e-read? What is better online e-books and e-documents than paper books and documents? And for whom? The features that make an early-model e-book useful enough to justify the cost, batteries, fragility and performance issues for some users will be immaterial to others. Such devices have limited utility without a significant investment in infrastructure and a certain critical mass. When the e-book device category is mature, they will come in forms as diverse as books and magazines are today. I'll start by considering what reading is and why people read, then describe the research we've been doing at Xerox that makes us think that e-reading is the "next big thing" for knowledge workers.
