Beyond the Scroll:
Cinematography for Information Display
Over the past few years, the web has shown us the power of ubiquitous, cheap communication and the grace and elegance of simple markup languages like HTML and XML. Web browsers have evolved from pure text display to now support images, spot animation and plugins of all sorts. But alas the current browsers are still very primitive in their use of modern video displays. HTML documents are formatted in two dimensions as a single column of material, while the animation capabilities of the full display are only used to scroll this content onto the screen. In this talk I'll discuss a few experiments that explore alternative methods for displaying content like HTML. This work is based on free thinking online how documents can be presented using the two spatial dimensions of the screen, time and user interaction. We can use lessons from paper folding, classic book design, type design, painting, music, film and TV, and the modern technologies of the web to arrive at better products for viewing and understanding internet content. The current scrolling interfaces are analogous to the early state of cinema, where film producers simply filmed action with a single camera pointed at a theatrical stage. It took many years and much experimentation to develop cinematic lighting, composition, camera angles, and film transitions like cuts and fades. How can we start to make progress on the cinematography of the web? Perhaps by rethinking previous assumptions online how documents can be displayed, we will create a new fluid interactive cinematic information space.
