Matthew Chalmersworks in information visualization and recommender systems at the University of Glasgow. His current research takes account of social perceptual issues both on the system side, in visualization and collaborative filtering, and on the theoretical side, relating contemporary semiology and hermeneutics to computational information representation. He has previously worked at Xerox EuroPARC, Cambridge, and at Ubilab, the Union Bank of Switzerland's research lab in Zurich, where he started the visualization group.

Collaborative Wayfinding in Information Spaces
Traditional information systems put artificial abstractions of people at their center, and people's activity has to fit around that. In a new paradigm, activity is at the center, and abstraction is peripheral and minimal. Models of what you do-and the system's responses-are personalized, adapting to users' actions. They deliberately minimize categorization: there is no such thing as 'metadata' here. This helps tip the balance of benefit and control of web activity data-away from owners of data repositories, and back toward users.
When you visit a commercial web site, you probably give away valuable activity information, which is used for customer profiling and micromarketing. I'll describe Recer, a system within this new paradigm that collects your web activity data and gives you a payback. It follows your 'path' through the web and offers recommendations: information that other people found useful in similar situations to yours. You decide whose information to use, and with whom to share yours. Systems within the new paradigm work with what you and your collaborators actually do. I'll discuss how they fit with other systems you use, and consequences for future electronic commerce, privacy and community.See schedule.
